Reina was born and raised in the Bear clan, one of the twelve barbarian tribes who lived within caves that flecked the snow covered peaks of the Everfrost Mountains. In the harsh environment, Reina grew to become a powerful hunter and protector praised for her bravery and prowess in combat. In their territorial struggle against the feared Ice Giants who also made the cold mountains their home, the barbarians were in a constant state of war. The twelve barbarian tribes had become allies in an effort to protect themselves against the onslaught of their oversized enemies. Under the combined might of the tribes, the Ice Giants were almost entirely eliminated. Almost. In the crystal caverns, the most powerful Ice Giant, Norgoth, had created a stronghold that the Barbarian hordes could not breach.
It was decided that since sheer strength could not prevail, the only option was stealth. The best warrior from each of the twelve tribes was chosen to form an elite group in an attempt to infiltrate the fortress under the cover of darkness. Their sole mission was to slay Norgoth and his remaining warriors.
Reina was honored to be the warrior chosen from the bear clan. She and her eleven comrades set out on their quest, determined to return with Norgoths head or die a glorious death in the attempt.
Reina and the other barbarians used their gifts at tracking to move unnoticed through the outer perimeter of the fortresses defenses. As they made their way deeper into the catacombs they encountered something they did not expect in a large open room.. A Crystal Wyrm. The snake-like beast was over fifty feet long and had dozens of needle shaped teeth . The creature had no eyes, but it could sense the barbarians presence from the heat emanating from their bodies. There was no way they could avoid detection…they would have to kill the beast.
Reina charged forward, her blade ripping long gashes in the Crystal Wyrm. The eleven barbarians followed Reina's charge. With shrieks that echoed in the caverns, the Crystal Wyrm fell before the powerful barbarians. But before they could revel in their victory, the warriors realized the battle had alerted those they came to kill. Norgoth and over fifty of his minions surrounded them. There was no way the twelve of them could defeat all of the Ice Giants, but the look in their eyes showed that they were determined to try.
Before the opposing forces could move against each other, a strange light illuminated the room, growing in intensity until it blinded all. As the light faded and vision cleared, a tall blonde man wearing flowing robes stood before the barbarians and Ice Giants. Reina had heard tales of this man, a mage known only as the “Oracle.” He looked over to Reina and smiled before turning to lock his gaze upon the Ice Giants. The Ice Giants roared as the Oracle raised his staff, magical energy building in its tip. “Your evil cannot be allowed to continue” said the Oracle. “Wait!” cried Reina, “This is our battle!” The Oracle smiled and replied “ I do not seek to steal your victory…I only wish to even the odds.” With that, magic energy erupted from the staff. The energy struck the crystal stalactites on the ceiling. Sharp crystal shards exploded and fell, raining down upon the Ice Giants. When the attack subsided, over half the Ice Giants laid dead on the ground. The Oracle looked at Reina once again before disappearing in the same manner with which he arrived. Seizing the moment, the twelve barbarians charged.
The Oracle calmly waited as six wound covered barbarians emerged from the caverns. Reina carried with her the head of Norgoth. It had been her blade that ended his life, an honor that would bring both her and the bear clan well deserved recognition from all of the tribes.
“We find no honor in using magic to defeat our enemies” Reina said to the Oracle with a voice strained from many recent battle cries. “Honor is in the deed, not in how one achieves it” replied the Oracle. Reina lingered on his words a moment. “Your words ring with the light of truth” she said. The Oracle smiled “Then listen closely…”.
